Applying Your Acrylic Polymer Coating To Wood

Make sure the wood — whether it’s a deck, dock, siding, or patio — is clean and dry. Apply primer, and allow it to sit until it’s no longer tacky. This takes about 30–40 minutes

In a 5-gallon bucket, add one gallon of Sherwin Williams Super Deck Solid Stain with one gallon of ACRYFIN® acrylic polymer coating. Mix together with a high-speed paddle bit mixer to ensure the liquids are thoroughly blended together. You can use a different brand or type of acrylic solid stain besides Sherwin Williams, but we recommend this one.

Once you’ve mixed the wood coating with the resin for several seconds, it’s time to add the aggregate. While still mixing, slowly add a 12-pound bag of aggregate to the stain and resin mixture. Once you’ve poured all of the aggregate into the bucket, continue mixing for another 30 seconds or until the mixture is smooth.

When the mixture becomes smooth, allow it to sit for one minute, then continue mixing for another 30 seconds. You’ll need to make sure all the white particles are thoroughly mixed in, so this may require scraping the sides of the bucket. The mixture is ready when it is completely smooth, thin, and easy to apply.

Use a roller brush with a ¾-inch nap cover when you’re ready to apply the coating. If you’re applying the coating to rough surfaces or boards that are spread further apart, use a roller cover with a thicker nap. As you apply the coating, make sure to fill all holes, cracks, crevices, and other voids completely with the first coat.

Wait until the first coat is dry to the touch, then apply a second coat. Use the same method for applying the second coat as you did the first. Use the same type of roller cover and follow the same direction of application. You will notice that the second coat provides greater coverage for the surface.

Allow the coating to dry until you can walk on it. At this stage, you can apply a coat of ACRYFIN® Clear UV sealer. This provides additional UV protection and stain resistance for the surface. Apply a thin layer using a roller cover with a nap thickness of either ¼-inch or ⅜-inch. One gallon of sealer should cover up to 400 square feet.
The coating and sealant will take about three or four days to finish curing. During this time, keep any pets, people, furniture, planters, and other belongings off the surface. Once the surface has finished curing, you can use the space as you normally would.

Once the first layer of concrete coating is dry to the touch, you can apply another thin coat using the same nap thickness of roller brush, applied in the same direction. Allow this second coat to dry.

When the second coat of acrylic polymer coating is dry to the touch, you can apply a final coat of ACRYFIN® UV sealer. This provides your concrete surface with an extra coat of durability and UV protection.

You will need to allow your concrete surface to cure for several days after applying ACRYFIN® acrylic polymer coating and UV sealer. Curing time for concrete coating takes anywhere from four to seven days. If the weather is warmer, the coating will take longer to cure. During this time, avoid placing any furniture, plants, grills, or other belongings on the surface. Pets and humans should also avoid walking on the surface while it cures.
